Australian Football

Have you ever seen it?  I hadn't.  Our friends from Perth invited us over a couple of Saturdays ago to watch the championship game-their equivalent of our Super Bowl.  Howard had ordered an Australian regulation ball to show us and play with the guys-however the field across from their house was VERY muddy.

Pat and Howard went to a lot of effort to make this a real Australian experience for us-we had sausage sizzlers and meat pies as snacks at half time.  Sausage sizzlers are similar to our hot dogs only spicier than plain hot dogs.  We also had yummy grilled onions to top them with.  They bought meat pies at our british store/restaurant-some were steak, steak and mushroom, or chicken curry.  They serve those with "brown sauce"  which is a little like our worcestershire sauce or A-1 steak sauce.

We enjoyed the game and it was really a close game.  Greg says that he likes unfamiliar sports better because he is not supposed to know what is going on.  Howard and Pat were really great to answer all of our questions though and we had a fun day!

Their goal posts are different from ours-there is a picture on wikipedia too.
from wikipedia if you are curious-

Australian rules football, officially known as Australian football,[1] also called football, footy or Aussie rules[2] (and in some regions is marketed as AFL, after the Australian Football League, the only fully professional Australian football league[3]) is a sport played between two teams of 18 players on the field on either an Australian Football ground, a modified cricket field or similar sized sports venue.
The game's objective is to move the ball downfield and kick the ball through the team's goal. The main way to score points is by kicking the ball between the two tall goal posts. The team with the higher total score at the end of the match wins[4] unless either a draw is declared or a tie-break is used.[
